Building the Ultimate Video Camera System – Part 2

This is the promised second and final part to my ultimate video camera system series. If you missed the first part, then I encourage you to read that first, here.

When setting out to build my camera rig, I had two goals in mind. First and foremost it needed to be “manageable” to use. It wouldn’t be very useful to me if it took half an hour to set it up, or wasn’t portable enough to take it anywhere I wanted to go. Second, the rig needed to be affordable to build.

Building the Ultimate Video Camera System – Part 1

If you’ve been paying any attention at all to my video related posts, then you know I’ve been experimenting with different ways to use my Nikon D800 DSLR as a video camera.

To refresh. . . A DSLR camera is designed primarily for taking photos, and it’s great at doing so! But, for taking videos – though the results are fantastic – a DSLR is awkward to hold and use. Correcting that isn’t all that hard per se – but what is hard is achieving that while spending the least amount of money.

DSLR Video Monitor

After a few days of using the LCD hood loupe Attachment on my DSLR, I’ve reluctantly come to the sad conclusion that it just isn’t quite good enough to reliably achieve accurate focus on videos when focusing the camera manually. Obviously, when using auto-focus this isn’t an issue because the camera takes care of that all by itself. But auto-focus can be “jerky” with a lot of bouncing in and out of focus before it locks on, so I’ll only be using auto-focus when it’s necessary – plus auto-focus can be noisy in otherwise quiet situations!

Time Warp. . .

I stumbled across some old video footage the other day that I had shot with an old second hand VHS camcorder I used to own. The footage is dated 4/15/93. Over 26 years ago!

DSLR – LCD hood loupe Attachment

As I mentioned in my last article (New Found Love of Video) I was awaiting for the LCD hood Loupe to be delivered for my DSLR camera.  Without repeating too much of what I previously wrote – the LCD hood loupe is a device that mounts onto the camera that shields the rear LCD display on the camera from glare, but also adds an eyepiece with optics to allow the user to see a magnified view of the LCD

New Found Love of Video

As of late, I seem to be shifting my focus away from photography and more toward videography.  Not that video is suddenly new to me or anything like that – because I’ve owned and used a video camera for years. (Canon HF-R11).  But for some strange reason, I find myself elevating the significance of video more than photos.

Photos have, and will always have, a place of importance in our lives, but videos capture life as it moves, breathes and lives. If a photo is worth a thousand words, then a video must be worth a million.

End of Another Show Season

Last Sunday marked the end of the 2019 Mariah Meadows Horse Show Season.  Yes, other shows do continue on through out the entire year at various locations, but for me, after shooting through the winter months for one season, I decided to take winters off for a break from it all.

2018 Horse Show Review

I’ve been messing around with video hosting services as of late. Self hosting on Zenfolio, Youtube, and Vimeo.

The self hosted solution would be ideal, simple because I’m already paying for the service to host my photos. The problem there however, it that the interface is a bit wonky – I.E. I don’t like it!
