Where does the time go?

Like I do almost every evening in the summer, I now find myself sitting in the yard under the shade tree, taking in the evening joys of summer… I love watching the kittens play and grow, and listening to the birds sing…

Right now a Mourning Dove is calling out somewhere in the distance, while a chorus of Cicada’s are singing harmony. It’s a gorgeous evening, nature is glorious and life abounds!

It’s hard to believe that soon it will be September, it doesn’t hardly seem possible. It wasn’t that long ago I was standing by the side of the road, watching from afar, the fireworks going off above the distant treeline on the 4th of July, and marveling over the equally awesome display of millions of fireflies dancing across the vast expanse of open field before me. By all standards, a simple evening, but one that I will not soon forget…

Another evening that doesn’t seem that long ago, I watched a lightning show off to the west, hoping that it would bring some rain.  It did not, but the evening show was no less spectacular…

The sun has set now, and the Mourning Doves are settled in for the night. The Cicadas are quiet now as well, but all is not quiet – far from it. The frogs out in the pond are singing now, and far away an Owl is calling out… Now is when the night creatures awake…

I love warm, clear nights when the stars come out and the night sounds take over… I can always find Ursa Major and Minor, and Cassiopeia, and Cepheus. Oh, and the kittens still play long after the sun goes down too…

Insects swarm around the dusk to dawn light at the peak of the house, and if you watch closely you will see the occasional bat swoop down for a quick snack…

I feel the end of summer as it draws near – the sky has been changing, the Sun has been changing as well.  I mourn the departure of life, and despise the grey darkness and death that looms ahead…

Certainly life will return again next Spring, but regardless of ones age, one never really knows how many more Springs one has left to embrace…
